The Work/Life Balance

Dealing with Burnout, Making Time for Fun, Outliers

What’s going on Digging Deep community. This week I want to tackle a topic I know we can all relate to. Balancing work and life. Many of us, especially in the Web 3 community, have a hard time straying away from the grind to see what else life has to offer. Trust me, I get it. On the other end of the spectrum, there may be people on the opposite end of the spectrum who do too much wandering. In this newsletter we will find a middle ground.

Before we begin, I just want to remind you that with every subscription, we grow this email list a little bigger. If you enjoy my writing and want to support the Digging Deep newsletter, I encourage you to hit that subscribe button and share with a friend, thank you.

Tweet of the week :

Life is Work, Work is Life

Some people prefer work. Some prefer life. Life as in, fun outside of work. Some make work their life. And some make life their work. We all have our preferences, and we all need to support ourselves. It is fair to say that most people would prefer a healthy balance of life and work. Ideally the work is your life’s purpose, but if that is not the case, then hopefully you find a way to make enough money to support your interests. On paper this all sounds good, but when it comes time to execute, it’s much easier said than done. You fall too far into a work grind. You go on too many extravagant traveling excursions. You get hit with an unexpected expense that causes you to work 10 extra hours that week. The list goes on. What’s important is that you find what work’s for you.

My Perspective

While writing about this topic, I am realizing there is no right or wrong answer. For me, a healthy work/life balance means adjusting the scales according to your goals. As I continue to work a minimum wage job for extra money, I come home and write, learn, and do more work that will push me closer to a career in the crypto industry. Obviously the scales are teetering hard toward work right now but I am aware of this. To offset the work, I make sure I find some time to work out everyday, surf occasionally, mountain bike once a week, and go to every concert when my favorite artist’s come around. This allows me to reset and have some fun without going off the rails. If it was the middle of the summer with all of my friends home and the best week of waves I have ever seen, you can bet your ass that scale won’t be balanced. In that situation it is fuck work, let’s have some fun. I guess what I am trying to say is, be aware of your situation and your goals. A good balance to you may be deadly to someone else.

Burnout

Burnout is normally a sign that something needs to be changed. If you feel burnt out to the point where you don’t even have the energy for some fun, there is a problem. The problem lies in the lack of balance. But sometimes we sign up for this. Look at the Elon Musk’s and Mark Zuckerberg’s of the world. Elon signed up to bring people to and from space, have the best electric car, provide wifi worldwide by satellite, and save free speech by running Twitter. I mean what the fuck. There is not a shot in hell Elon makes just as much time for life as he does work. He can’t. Same with Zuck. Zuck is responsible for the content that over 3 billion people see on their social media. Although we have seen some videos of him doing MMA and surfing to get an escape, it is a temporary escape before getting sucked back in to his company’s needs. Then again, these are people who fulfill their life’s purpose through the companies they built. So maybe they are ok with that. However, the usual human does not like to be burnt out. Experiencing burnout is a slippery slope. It can completely turn you off from your work and open up an extended period of laziness and meaninglessness. Pay attention to this and be careful.

Outliers

Kobe Bryant. David Goggins. Albert Einstein. These are all outliers. I often hear people say they want to find a good balance and that is why I am writing this newsletter. With that being said, a balanced life isn’t exactly a winning formula for people who want to be the best. You never hear a story that the best in the world was off relaxing before getting back to work. You hear that they won a championship and were back in the gym the following day. Outliers. Once Albert Einstein came up with the Theory of Relativity he didn’t say, “Well that should be good enough, time to sit down and chill.” Of course not, his mind was already finding the next law in physics. David Goggins has proven himself to be the toughest motherfucker on the planet. His definition of balance is doing B.U.D.S Seal training three times, running ultra marathons on fucked up knees and breaking the pull up record just cuz. But guess what, that’s why he is the baddest. These people are ok with not being normal. In fact, I think normal must scare them. They are obsessed with being the best. Like I said, it depends on your goals.

My Question to You:
